Troubleshoot capture, publishing, and playback

Quick fixes for the problems most likely to interrupt a ShowHow workflow.

“Start recording” is disabled

Switch to the normal website tab you want to capture, then select the ShowHow toolbar icon again. Chrome grants access to the active tab from that click.

  • ShowHow cannot record chrome:// pages or the Chrome Web Store.
  • If you changed tabs while the side panel stayed open, select the toolbar icon on the new tab.
  • If step tracking is off, select Enable step tracking and approve Chrome’s prompt.

Clicks are missing from the guide

Check that step tracking was on during capture. When a workflow moves to a different site or opens a new tab, that site may need its own permission before clicks there can be detected.

Use Add manual step during capture for an important state that has no natural click.

Publishing fails

  • Reconnect the browser if ShowHow asks you to sign in again.
  • On Free, unpublish an active guide if all three hosted slots are in use.
  • Check the storage meter in the dashboard. Unpublish a guide, upgrade, or add storage if the allowance is full.
  • Retry after confirming the internet connection; local editing and exporting still work offline.

An embedded guide does not appear

  • Open the direct guide link first to confirm the guide is still published.
  • Use the embed snippet from ShowHow instead of the normal share-page URL.
  • Check whether the CMS stripped the iframe or its content-security policy blocks the ShowHow domain.
  • Give the iframe a visible width and a 16:9 aspect ratio or explicit height.

Chrome closed during capture

Recorder state can survive a service-worker restart, but a full browser restart cannot currently resume and assemble an interrupted recording. Start the capture again after reopening Chrome.
