Privacy Policy
This policy explains what ShowHow processes, what stays in your browser, what leaves it, and the controls available to authors and viewers.
Last updated: 1 August 2026
ShowHow is a Chrome extension and hosted service for turning a browser workflow into an interactive, step-by-step guide. In this policy, “ShowHow,” “we,” and “us” refer to the ShowHow service, and “you” means an extension user, account holder, or viewer of a published guide.
The short version
- Recording starts only after you click Start recording. ShowHow captures the selected tab, not your desktop, camera, microphone, cookies, or browser history.
- Captured screenshots and draft guides remain in local browser storage unless you choose to publish. Exporting creates a local download and does not upload the guide to us.
- Publishing uploads the guide and its reviewed screenshots so anyone with the unlisted link can view it. You can unpublish it from the extension or dashboard.
- We do not sell personal information, serve ads, or use capture data for advertising.
Information the Chrome extension processes
During a recording, ShowHow processes screenshot pixels from the selected tab; the tab URL, hostname, and page title; click coordinates; limited visible element labels and accessible names used to create step titles; scroll and navigation events; guide names and instructions you write; and privacy masks you place. This is the website content and user activity needed to build the guide you requested.
ShowHow deliberately does not read or store the values you type into website form fields. Password, payment-card, one-time-code, and other marked sensitive fields are detected from field attributes without reading their values and are covered in captured pixels. You can add further masks and must complete the Privacy review before publishing.
Draft guide data and screenshots are stored in extension-controlled browser storage on your device. A connected browser also stores a random device credential locally so it can publish to your ShowHow account. The credential is sent only to ShowHow over HTTPS and can be revoked from dashboard settings.
The Chrome Web Store release does not send captured pages, screenshots, or browsing activity to an artificial-intelligence provider, and it does not execute remotely supplied browsing instructions.
Information the hosted service collects
When you use a ShowHow account or hosted features, we process:
- Account information: your email address, sign-in identifiers, active browser connections, plan, and account settings. Authentication is provided by Supabase and may use Google sign-in when you choose it.
- Published content: the guide title, instructions, interaction metadata, reviewed screenshots, publishing status, and revision history that you choose to upload.
- Billing information: subscription status and Stripe customer and subscription identifiers. Stripe collects and processes payment-card details; ShowHow does not store complete payment-card numbers.
- Service and security information: ordinary request, error, and security logs processed by our hosting and database providers. These may include an IP address, user agent, timestamps, and requested route for a limited operational period.
Published-guide analytics
When someone opens a published guide, ShowHow creates a random, signed analytics session that expires after 24 hours. We record whether the guide opened, started, or completed; the highest step reached; per-step visits and visible time; page or embed mode; a coarse device category (desktop, tablet, or mobile); and, where available, the referring website's hostname.
ShowHow's guide analytics do not retain the viewer's IP address, full referring URL, email, precise location, advertising identifier, cookie identifier, or browser fingerprint. Infrastructure providers may still process ordinary request data as described above. Guide authors can download their retained analytics records from dashboard settings.
Why we use information
We use information only to:
- capture, edit, export, host, display, and measure the guides you request;
- authenticate accounts and connected extension installs;
- operate subscriptions, enforce service limits, and provide customer support;
- protect ShowHow and its users, debug failures, and prevent abuse; and
- comply with applicable legal obligations.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use disclosure
ShowHow's use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
We use Chrome API data only to provide and improve ShowHow's user-facing guide-creation features. We do not use or transfer it for personalized advertising, creditworthiness, lending, or unrelated purposes. We do not allow people to read it except when necessary for security, legal compliance, support requested with your consent, or the operation of the feature you asked us to provide.
Retention and deletion
- Local drafts remain on your device until you delete them, clear the extension's storage, or uninstall the extension.
- Published guides and screenshots remain hosted until you unpublish them or the service removes them under its storage and account rules. Unpublishing disables the link and requests deletion of its hosted screenshots immediately. A screenshot already cached by the storage network or a viewer's browser may remain retrievable for up to about one minute while that deletion propagates.
- Detailed anonymous guide analytics are automatically deleted after 24 months. Guide revision metadata may remain with the author's account until account deletion.
- Billing, fraud-prevention, backup, and security records may be retained longer where reasonably necessary or legally required.
To request access, correction, export, or deletion of account data, contact us using showhow.support@gmail.com. We may need to verify that you control the account. Removing hosted account data does not delete drafts stored locally in a browser, which must be deleted from that extension install.
Security and international processing
ShowHow uses HTTPS, scoped device credentials, access controls, and provider security features to protect hosted information. No system can promise absolute security. Our providers may process information in countries other than yours, subject to their contractual and legal safeguards.
Children
ShowHow is a workplace productivity product and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the product or legal requirements change. We will change the date above and provide additional notice when a change materially affects how we use data.
