Shape the steps

Select a step from the list to edit its title and instruction. Keep titles short and action-led; use the instruction for the reason, choice, or expected result.

  • Drag steps to reorder them.
  • Split a step when it contains two distinct actions.
  • Merge neighbouring steps when the viewer should understand them as one action.
  • Delete detours or accidental clicks that do not help someone complete the task.

Direct the viewer’s attention

Move or resize the highlight so it surrounds the exact control the viewer should use. Spotlight dims the rest of the screen; zoom moves closer to small or dense controls.

Use these effects sparingly. A consistent highlight is easier to follow than every effect being active on every step.

Demonstrate typing safely

Add a typing animation when the viewer needs to see example input. Choose a pace, starting text, field appearance, and whether the completed text should remain visible on later steps.

Typing animation text is authored content and is included in the guide. It is different from what you typed during capture, which ShowHow never reads.

Preview the finished experience

  2. Start from the intro and use the guide exactly as a viewer will.
  3. Check mobile-sized and full-width playback if the guide will be embedded responsively.
  4. Return to Edit for corrections, then publish or republish.
